We live it for an hour each month by creating a gentle peace within ourselves and a harmony within the group to show and to share with others.

Where                             :    Speakers Corner, Hyde Park, London.

When                              :    Come rain or shine! 1st Sunday of every month. The next walk will be August 1st.

Time                               :    11am until 12am

Meeting place               :    Come out of the exit marked "Speakers Corner" at Marble Arch tube station, up the steps and enter the park on the right. Bear left across the open area and look out for 'Speakers cafe'. It's a small green building with a conical roof.. Watch out for our 'Walk in Peace' banner on the right.

What will happen        :    We will set off in single file, lead by the banner, at a slow steady pace, from the cafe area down the path which leads to Hyde Park Corner. Then we'll walk back to arrive at the cafe area by Midday. Then we'll have a chat and a coffee. Easy isn't it?

What's the point            :   Most walkers agree that simply being outdoors for an hour with your own thoughts can be quite uplifting, stimulating, relaxing, who knows - everyone is different. And as there is no agenda except peace, each walker brings and takes away with them peace from their own perspective.

January 6th 2008

The last walk was Sunday the 6th of January; which turned out to be a glorious Sunday morning with brilliant sunshine and a lovely chill in the air which made you just want to wrap up warm and snug. It was great to see a couple of new, first time peace walkers and some old friends too.

I thought the peace walk was a very good opportunity to stop and think about what is happening in the world around us. It was good to experience something I’ve never done before, something different. After I’d completed the walk I felt a great sense of satisfaction that I’d done it. Everybody should try it once.

Walk for peace. An interesting concept. Not until one actually participates does the idea make more sense. Walking for an hour doesn’t sounds particularly challenging. But it’s very slow. And all the while I'm thinking right, I’m supposed to be thinking about peace. About war. About politics. But my mind wondered, I started thinking about random things. Just thinking. I started noticing things in the park. I wasn’t quite sure how or when it happened. But when we all stopped, I did feel at peace. Not world wide peace. But within-peace. I felt very calm. And I guess the idea is if everyone could do that then eventually, one day, there may well be world peace. Hopefully.

Was it really true what I heard on the radio this morning? That Bush and Blair were ready to disarm? Or that as a measure of Goodwill the opening ceremony to the 2012 games were to be held in Paris? April fool?

We had 11 Peace Walkers this morning, all on good form, and we had a lovely day for it too. I love it when the sun comes out and warms up our backs as we turn in our walk and head back up the path.

I estimate around 800 people saw our walk on Sunday. We had our fair share of curious tourists, joggers, babies and a peaceful cyclist who gave us a few supportive dings of his bell. I wonder if there’s a group of cyclists somewhere who pedal for peace?

I can honestly swear that in the 4 years or so I have been walking in peace I have never been drenched, or caught out by the weather such that I was uncomfortable. I have walked in very cold temperatures over the winter months, but have always been wrapped up for them, and in fact I actually feel quite refreshed and alive when out in the chilly Hyde Park. I have also caught a little sun on my face, but only on the way down the path, as the sun was at our backs on the way up the path!

Well, this walk could have been the first when I got soaked, but it didn't prove to be that way at all. Everyone had a brolly. just in case, as it had rained overnight and there were still some spots about when we gathered near the cafe. Most of the spots seemed to fall from the rain reserviors on the leafs of the trees, and none at all fell whilt we were walking. My luck held fast yet again.

Clare led us off on this walk and set a spectacularly slow pace - which was fantastic. Each walk has it's own dynamics and onw way to really change that apart from the weather is the speed of the walk. This walk was brilliant for really chilling out and experiencing something quite meditative, just by being outside and walking.

One thing which never fails to amaze me is the number of people who see our walk every month. The tourists, the joggers, the kids in prams and the dogs on leads. During the summer we can easily be passed by a 1000 people on our walk through Hyde Park. No, really! A 1000! I dont count them all and get their names and addresses of course, but do a count over ten minutes and scale it up. In the Autumn, it cools off, of course, but we still had an audience of 500. As I was at the back of this walk, I kept an eye out for people taking our picture and asked them to forward a copy to the website. Watch this space......

Remember Forrest Gump? His Mom always used to say, 'Lifes like a box of chocolates - never can tell what you gonna get!'

Kinda the same thing in Peace Walking too. Sometimes there are many of us, sometimes just a few, but that's ok. This walk was a little different as we had an email from an American peace campaigner who was in London for a holiday and asled if she could join us. That's her 3rd front front with the hat. We also had an email from a photographer doing a photo-journal assignment. She didn't stop for a chat, but sent us the 3 shots below. As you can see, the leaves are falling, the conkers have all been picked up by kids and there's a lovely long string of Peace Walkers. As well as some regulars, we were joined by a family from Florida who saw our details posted on www.gumtree.co.uk.

So, as his Mom used to say, 'never can tell what you gonna get!'
